Brilliant update. Also extremely happy to see you found your best staple crops after lots of trials. There really is no other way around it- no amount of reading books will tell you which crops which seem perfect on paper just refuse to do anything useful under specific conditions.

Have you considered crossing the meat rabbits with the common hardy variety? That is how I would do it. If time permits, consider buying a couple of male meat rabbits at the best possible time of year for them to live long enough to impregnate your hardy strain. That way if they drop dead after you still have a chance on harnessing some of their useful traits.
